Christmas in July

Question for Reflection:  How has Christmas changed your life?

Opening Reading: John 1: 1—5, 14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth.

Prelude “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” Sung by Keisha Prime

Call to Worship

Good news of great joy!  The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
Because Christ has been born in the world, we respond in wonder:
with the angels, we sing glory to God;
with the shepherds, we share the good news;
with Mary, we ponder the wondrous words.
the Word has come into the world and the darkness cannot overcome it.
We, who walked in darkness, now live in the light of God.

Hymn “Joy to the World”                          TPH # 40

Prayer of Praise

God of all, Incarnate Son, is there yet a new song we can sing to you?

A song to be learned from the heavens and the earth: where the roar of the sea, the exultation of the fields, and the joy of the trees are already singing a chorus of glad rejoicing?

Even if no ear may hear your coming, help us hear the music of creation.

Then, with the whole cosmos, we will sing of your glorious light and declare
your Glory.  Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace in a crescendo of praise, bless your holy name.  Amen.

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew 1: 18—21

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiahtook place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.  Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.  But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child   conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

Special Music   “Mary Did You Know?” Sung by Keisha Prime

Sung by Keisha Prime

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has come to make you new?
This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little Baby you kissed the face of God?

Mary did you know.

The blind will see.
The deaf will hear.
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap.
The dumb will speak
The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
The sleeping Child you're holding is the Great, I Am

Reading from the Gospel of Luke 2: 8—16

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.  Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see -- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger."

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us."  So they went with haste and found Mary and   Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.

Hymn         “Silent Night”                     TPH # 60

Go out in joy and hope, with the song of the angels on your lips to tell: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace.
Do not be afraid—the light still shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

May the love of God enfold us,
the joy of Christ encompass us,
and the Holy Spirit encourage us,
as we walk in the Light of Christ.
