This worship service includes a celebration of Holy Communion.  If you wish to partake of elements when appropriate in the service we invite you prepare your juice and your bread (or alternative) ahead of time.

We will also be having a time of “Celebration of the Saints” when we will light candles on the Communion Table in the sanctuary of Lakeview P.C.  If you wish to light your own candle, prepare the candle, holder and lighter ahead of time.

Prelude     “Spirit, Open My Heart”    Ruth Duck,1994, sung by Keisha Prime

Sung by Keisha Prime

Spirit, open my heart to the joy and pain of living. As you love may I love, in receiving and in giving. Spirit, open my heart. Write your love upon my heart as my law, my goal, my story. In each thought, word, and deed, may my living bring you glory.

Call to Worship

O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in God.
With hearts and hands and voices, let us praise the Lord!

Opening Prayer

In life and in death you bless us, O God.  When trouble overwhelms us, you save us. When sorrow overtakes us, you comfort us. When death overcomes us, you overcome death and raise us to new life. You promise us joy everlasting and, even now, give us glad hope and glimpses of your realm which is to come when Christ makes all things new. For calling us your children, and bestowing upon us such great love, we give you thanks, in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

MusicLove Divine, All Loves Excelling” Charles Wesley, 1747
sung by Keisha Prime

Sung by Keisha Prime

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down.
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit, Let us find the promised rest;
Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver, Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return, and never, Never-more Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above;
Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing. Glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish, then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory, Till in heave we take our place.
Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love and praise.

CALL TO CONFESSION

In the face of God’s goodness we recognize our failings.  Hungry for God’s mercy, let us tell truth about our lives, that we might receive grace in time of need.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, you call us your own children and cover us with your love. We would seek to be merciful as you are and to show compassion as you do, but we fail to live the life to which we have been called.  Where we ought to forgive, we condemn; the evil which we should shun, we embrace. Forgive our sinful ways, tame our wayward wills, and make us more like Christ, until we are raised in perfection with him.  Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

Sisters and brothers, those who take refuge in God will not be condemned. Believe the good news!
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Prayer for Illumination

Holy Spirit, faithful teacher, come to your people, that through the words of the Holy Scriptures your power will fill us with thanksgiving Amen.

A Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures  Isaiah 25:6-9 NRS

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

A Reading from the Gospels   Matthew 5:1-12 CEV

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the side of a mountain and sat down.
Jesus' disciples gathered around him, and he taught them:
God blesses those people who depend only on him.
They belong to the kingdom of heaven!
God blesses those people who grieve. They will find comfort!
God blesses those people who are humble. The earth will belong to them!
God blesses those people who want to obey him more than to eat or drink.
They will be given what they want!
God blesses those people who are merciful. They will be treated with mercy!
God blesses those people whose hearts are pure. They will see him!
God blesses those people who make peace. They will be called his children!
God blesses those people who are treated badly for doing right.
They belong to the kingdom of heaven.
God will bless you when people insult you, mistreat you, and tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. Be happy and excited! You will have a great reward in heaven. People did these same things to the prophets who lived long ago.

Music    “DEEP RIVER”     Traditional Negro Spiritual, sung by Keisha Prime

Sung by Keisha Prime

Deep River,
My home is over Jordan.
Deep River Lord.
I want to cross over into campground.

Deep River.
My home is over Jordan.
Deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground

Oh, don't you want to go,
To the gospel feast.
That promised land,
Where all, is peace.

Oh, deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

The Invitation

 Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; let those who have no money come and eat. O taste and see that the Lord is good! Happy are those who find refuge in God!

The Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

All thanks and praise be to you, most holy God, giver of all life.
You made us for companionship and shaped us for love;
you gave us your good earth and taught us to care;
you established your law that we might learn justice and give you honor with our lives. We forgot how to love; we ceased to give care and failed to abide by your life-giving law. You sent us prophets to call us back to you and, when that was not enough, you came— Word-made-flesh, your very being— and overwhelmed us with love.
And so we sing with all the saints on earth and all the angels in heaven:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

In Jesus you blessed us as never before. Thank you for the ways he taught us in word and deed: he fed us in homes and on hillsides; he healed us in body, mind, and soul and showed us that true greatness is in humility and true power in weakness.

We remember the night before his death, when he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. We remember how he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant, sealed in my blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, remember me.

How can we thank you for the gift he gave? When the world did its worst, he took on our death that we might be clothed in light and life. Great is the mystery of faith:

Dying, he destroyed our death. Rising, he restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory!

Raised to new life, still bearing the scars, Jesus promised us an Advocate and Guide. Thank you for the Spirit at work in us and among us, who strengthens and sustains, challenges and prods, gives us life and surprises us with signs of your unending grace. Pour out your Holy Spirit now upon this bread and wine, that it may be to us the body and blood of Christ and anoint us that we might be one with him and one another.

With thanksgiving, we offer ourselves to you now, Holy Three in One— our bodies to do your work and our voices to sing your praise— grateful, even now, that when this earthly life is ended you will welcome us home, where we will live in eternal joy with you and all the saints, bathed in light and lost in unending songs of praise.

Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to you, O God, forever and ever! Amen!

Partaking the elements

Jesus said: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
When we break bread, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? (share the bread)
When we give thanks over the cup, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? (share the cup)

Prayer after Communion
Holy God, we thank you for this feast of grace and life. Send us out to answer the summons of our Lord Jesus Christ to a new life, and to follow him with joy and gladness. Set our feet in his holy way, that our lives may be signs of his life and all we do may show forth his love. AMEN

The Lord’s Prayer (sung by Keisha Prime)

Charge

Beloved, may the Spirit guide us to that which is true, that which is honorable, that which is just, that which is commendable, excellent and worthy of praise, that we may praise the name of the Lord forever

BLESSING

The grace of the one true God, who is over and above all things, keep your hearts at peace, your minds in truth, and your lives in grace.  Amen.

Postlude      "O What Shall I Render?"   Latin American hymn and melody sung by Keisha Prime

O what shall I render
For love so unbounded
That led Thee, dear Savior,
For sinners to die?
Receive, I beseech Thee,
My heart’s humble offering:
Thanksgiving and praises,
My glad heart upraises
To Thee, Lord, on high.
Thanksgiving and praises,
My glad heart upraises
To Thee, Lord, on high.

?Conque pagaremos
Amor tan inmenso?
Que diste tu vida
Por el peccador;
En cambio recibes
La ofrenda humilde,
La ofrenda humilde,
Senor Jesucristo,
De me Corazon,
La ofrenda humilde,
Senor Jesucristo,
De mi Corazon.

And when the night draweth
Its curtains of darkness,
My eyes view Thy glories
The heavens declare;
And back of the starlight
I know God my Father,
Or waking or sleeping,
Is lovingly keeping
Me in his deep care.
Is lovingly keeping
Me in his deep care.
